VERNISSAGE

Opening of the 5th "ART an der Grenze"  festival with guided tours through the exhibition, the Frankfurt-Słubice Pub Choir and the Polish indie pop folk band Paula & Karol.

20.30 Uhr |  Paula i Karol
Now, if you don’t know much about the band, Paula & Karol may seem like a Canadian girl and a Polish guy who got together to write a few happy folk pop songs on a few folky instruments.
But the real Paula & Karol are not just a duo but a large family of Warsaw-based musicians who, for the past seven years, have been capturing the hearts of young and old alike, across Poland and abroad. It all started when the Guardian listed them in their “sound of 2011 around the world”, stating that „They are Poland’s new superheroes. Not the tight pants, fluttering cape kind. More like, come to our concert – we’ll break your heart, and then we’ll fix it up kind.”
By singing in English, and writing songs filled with catchy melodies and lyrics that prioritize honesty, community, and love over hype and postmodern blase, the band has been touching listeners that cross a range of generations and nationalities.

The two songwriters Claudia Woloszyn und Heike Mildner, from Frankfurt (Oder) and Berkenbrück, will solve this discrepancy durig the musical evening. The two women complete each other's  songs with the guitar, violin, percussion and voice.
Bild
Claudia Wołoszyn writes and sings about snails and wolves, about searching and finding, about life and love.
Her songs tell stories of the particular in the general with charm and intensity. Her concerts are characterised by her warm voice, strong telling pictures and a touch of irony. The style of Claudia Wołoszyns songs vary from Chanson and Ballads to Bossa Nova.
Claudia Wołoszyn lived in Rostock, Berlin and Krakau. She calls Frankfurt Oder her hom for six years now. “I like living by the river as a commuter between two different worlds,” she tells us in person and in her songs.
Besides being a songwriter Claudia Wołoszyn is also a nurse, a teacher, founder of a family and mother to two children. A lot of life that she translates into her poetic songs.

As a child Heike Mildner learned to play the violin and switched to playing the guitar later on. She also owns a piano, music is everywhere in her life.
In Schwerin she became a teacher, played the violin in the “Singeclub” and tryed to write her first songs. After the collapse of the Soviet Union Heike Mildner studied music, played the violin in the Berlin Avantgarde-Band “Wund- und Spritzköpfe” and founded, composed and arranged for  the acapella group “vocaLiesen”.
Today Heike Mildner works as a Journalist for a agricultural weekly newspaper. After she moved from the big city to a more rural area her songs tell stories about the rural life, the people that live there and everything else that makes life worth living.

2 documentaries about the region:
NOWA AMERIKA (D, 2016, 60 min) and ZU FRIEDENSZEITEN WURDE HIER GEBAUT (D, 2010, 50 min)

NOWA AMERIKA, the “land in between” is a constructed reality created by the artist Michael Kurzwelly. It describes the german polish border area. This constructed reality with its own language and anthem, questions nationalist ideas. The documentary by Kristof Kannegießer is a roadmovie that leads through an unknown and mostly invisible land.

The documentary ZU FRIEDENSZEITEN WURDE HIER GEBAUT was directed by the Viadrina graduates Janine Halka and Johann Scharfe in 2010. Residents and shop owners tell the story of the “Große Scharrenstraße” and their personal relationship to the street which was designed as a strolling promenade by the late GDR regime. Original historical material of the street are shown in the documentary.

Singer - songwriter evening

Raum A, Große Scharrnstraße 23a
 free entry
with Merle (Cello), Andreas Zimmer (Guitar) and Janet Gillette (Guitar)

In her songs Merle tells us stories about cherry blossom vacuum cleaners, cracks in the pavement,  laughter above her head and seagull shit that drops next to her. And about the nighttime turmoil.
Grewing up on the north sea island Föhr Merle always made music. Since 2011 Merle writes her own songs between her different realities (Moldawia, music studies, political activism). She is inspired by the “Rotzfreche Asphaltkultur (RAK)” an affiliation of musicians from the political left.
Since 2013 she is on tour as a solo artist. Her first album supported the project Wulkania that provides housing for refugees. She also lives in this housing space north of Berlin herself with her two children.

“Singing for me is the closest to flying” says Songwriter Janet Gillette. Her songs try to express the experiences gained from her journey. Her calm and soft voice takes us along on journey to our personal  inner landscape. Her songs reflect a quest, for the “things that want to be sung, to be heard”. She is inspired by Jazz, english folk music from the 60s and irish ballads. Improvisation is a big part of her compositions. “Always I search for this one chord that opens up new spaces, that lifts, weiden or drops the melody - the melos, the dance with my soul.”
